SMP Aftercare Guide: How to Protect and Maintain Your Scalp Micropigmentation

Proper SMP Aftercare is essential to ensure your Scalp Micropigmentation heals properly and retains its colour and definition. Following the right steps after each session helps your results last longer and keeps your scalp healthy.

Days 1–4: Protect and Heal

  • Keep it dry: Avoid washing your scalp, swimming, or heavy sweating. If needed, gently dab the area with a clean, sterile cloth.

  • No shaving or cutting: Allow the skin to heal naturally without irritation.

  • Avoid sun exposure: UV rays can damage healing skin and affect pigment retention. Wear a loose, breathable hat outdoors.

  • Skip workouts and heat: No exercise, saunas, or steam rooms to prevent sweat and increased blood flow to the scalp.

Days 5–7: Start Gentle Care

  • Light washing: Rinse gently with lukewarm water. Pat dry—don’t scrub or use shampoo yet.

  • Mild exercise: You may resume light activity but still avoid anything that causes heavy sweating.

  • Moisturise once daily: Apply a fragrance-free, gentle moisturiser to prevent dryness and tightness.

Days 8–14: Support Healing and Pigment Retention

  • Normal washing: Use a mild, sulphate-free shampoo. Avoid exfoliating products.

  • Hydrate the skin: Moisturise twice a day. If dryness continues, apply a thin layer of coconut oil.

  • Sun protection: Always apply SPF 30+ sunscreen when outside. UV rays can cause early fading of SMP pigments.

Long-Term SMP Maintenance

  • Stay hydrated and moisturised: Healthy, supple skin keeps the pigment looking sharp and natural.

  • Use SPF daily: Whether sunny or cloudy, UV protection is key to preventing pigment fading.

  • Avoid harsh treatments: Skip chemical peels, retinol, or microdermabrasion on the scalp area.

  • Plan for top-ups: SMP pigments naturally lighten over time. A touch-up every few years keeps your results looking fresh.
